VCU’s College of Humanities and Sciences is seeking a social media and events specialist who can help us tell the story of the College through innovative digital content, as well as grow our social following and engagement. The ideal candidate is committed to sharing the brand story, boosting reputational awareness and protecting the reputation of the institution, growing and engaging with target audiences, supporting business goals such as driving enrollment growth and retention, and increasing the share of voice across all social media platforms. Social media duties will encompass 70% of the position. The other 30% of the position is dedicated to managing events in the College, and includes planning, coordinating, and documenting special events, lectures, meetings and diploma ceremonies for the Dean’s office and the schools, departments and programs within the College. The social media and events specialist reports to the director of communications in the Office of the Dean.
Communications Specialists perform professional services requiring an in-depth knowledge of one or more communication specialties. They are responsible for translating organizational or client goals into strategic media deliverables and are typically responsible for providing services with a primary focus in a specific specialty, distinguishing the specialist job from the generalist job. They may specialize in communications services such as audio or multi-media production; communications or marketing project management; graphic design; original writing; photography; print layout and design; print production; social media design, development, and maintenance; web or digital design, development, and maintenance; and/or videography. They may work independently or as a member of a team. They work under limited supervision, making moderately complex decisions independently and referring unprecedented issues to an upper-level manager. Specialists typically report to a manager or director or in some units may report to an administrator.
•Maintain a social media calendar that outlines original and relevant content.
•Create daily original content for the College’s social media feeds that speak directly to our various communities (faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, media).
•Create campaigns that aid the long-term goals of the College, including student recruitment and retention, donor engagement, alumni outreach, and more.
•Stay up to date with trends in the social media landscape.
•Serve as expert and mentor to social media liaisons from various departments/schools within the College; this may include maintaining a social media liaison listserv, creating toolkits for the liaisons, hosting training sessions, etc.
•Set, track and report on performance metrics for all organic social channels - weekly and quarterly reviews -- as well as suggest content optimization.
•Ensure brand consistency in copy through tone, voice and terminology.
•Work with university-level social media unit to ensure best practices and compliance with VCU social media policies .
•Plan, coordinate and document special events, lectures, meetings and diploma ceremonies (virtual and in-person) for the Dean’s Office, and the schools, departments, and programs within the College of Humanities and Sciences.
•Organize and handle logistics for alumni engagement and fundraising events.
•Help coordinate print collateral with relation to events.
•Responsible for all fiscal and administrative operations of special event planning, including purchasing and billing, staying within budget, vendor contracts, scheduling, customer service, etc.
Job Education and Experience:
•3 years of experience as a social media specialist or similar role
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
•Excellent knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other social media best practices
•Understanding of social media metrics and social media KPIs
•Experience creating static assets and editing with Photoshop or other creative programs (animated assets and video editing a plus).
•Familiarity with web design and publishing
