Richmond, VA – In 1938, a Richmond appliance company built a 7500 square foot storefront to showcase the latest washers and dryers to downtown shoppers. Since that time, the building has evolved into a jewelry store, a disco, a record label, and a photography studio. After two years, and a million-dollar face-lift, the facility has just reopened its doors as 9WG Studios.

9WG Studios features two audio recording suites, a two-story tracking room and isolation booth, two edit suites and a shooting cyc. The acoustic spaces were expertly designed by studio bau:ton and nonzero\architecture’s principal, Swiss-born Peter Grueneisen, FAIA, whose projects have included studios for Hans Zimmer, Sony Music Entertainment Japan and the Dave Matthews Band. Grueneisen teamed with the Richmond firm of Glavé and Holmes to create a facility of multi-purposed rooms with a good vibe.

“The talent, enthusiasm and professionalism of the owners, as well as the exciting location really made this project stand out for us,” says Grueneisen. “A close collaboration with the whole team has resulted in a very comfortable and inspiring environment, perfectly suited to the creative artists who will occupy it. We are thrilled with the outcome, from its technical functionality to its architecture and acoustics and we expect great things to come out of this amazing facility.”

Marna Bales, Jody Boyd and Melanie Cox are the owners of the building and have worked together in the production industry for nearly 15 years. They wanted to create a place that would not only house their businesses but would function as a haven for freelance graphic designers, mixers, editors, videographers and photographers alike. This non-traditional approach allows 9WG Studios to function as a full service facility or as a space for independent contractors depending on the clients’ needs. The studio is the new business address for Red Amp Audio (www.redampaudio.com), Spang TV (www.spangtv.com), and Mad Box Post (www.madboxpost.com).

“We share a passion for doing good work, and are committed to being attentive to our clients,” says Bales. “9WG is a big step for us but one that has felt right at every turn. We’re confident our clients will find this space as resourceful and productive as we do.”
