In December of 2005 Richmond based commercial photographer and 2006 recipient of the VMFA Professional Fellowship Grant, Christopher Winton-Stahle was asked to participate in a bilateral exchange program sponsored by the Rose Group for Cross-Cultural Understanding and the China Association for International Friendly Contact. The program's aim was to increase American understanding of China and its history, core values, traditions and philosophy.

From this experience, Winton-Stahle, produced a mesmerizing photographic series appropriately title, “China Now” which not only focuses on old world china with a variety of traditional scenes of people and daily life but also begins to explain through visual depiction the country’s explosive economic and technological growth as it moves past the Mao-era of the 20th century into a time where Traditions are evolving and, in some cases, being consumed by technology, development and the drive for a newer, bigger, and better China.

“China Now”, is a long term traveling educational exhibition of 30 (20 x 24”) pigment print photographs that will be available for local viewing at the VMFA’s Pauley Center from September 4th to October 28th 2007 before it begins its 3 year tour with the VMFA’s partnering museums making it available to the public until August of 2010.
